Individual therapy can provide needed support in times of stress/distress. Therapy should also allow and individual to build insight and work toward personal goals. The goals and structure provided in therapy are specific to each person and must occur within the context of a positive clinician-client relationship.
Child and adolescent counseling is much like adult individual therapy with interventions and treatment being focused on the differing developmental needs of the minor. Clinicians often conducts child/teen sessions with the minor individually and welcomes parent involvement (when appropriate) in the latter portion of an appointment. This allows the minor to feel the same privacy/confidentiality offered to adults while exploring sensitive material.
